About Us
Born into Injustice : The Challenge Our Heroes Face
Just as Sojourner Truth was born into a system that devalued her body, voice, and future, BIPOC leaders today are navigating systems that continue to marginalize their brilliance, passion, and power.
Across Charlotte and beyond, Black, Indigenous, and People of Color are not just surviving—they are building, innovating, and leading transformative change in their communities. They are doing this with grit, resilience, and vision—even when resources are scarce.
These leaders are:
*Covering high space rental costs with personal sacrifice
*Carrying their communities while caring for their own mental health
*Creating joy, safety, and healing where none previously existed
When BIPOC leaders are choosing between their own self care and their mission, we risk losing not just programs—but progress. These leaders are heroes, and they deserve more.
These leaders must be supported, celebrated and poured into:
Our donation-based event space reduces overhead costs so leaders can host programs, board meetings, and community events in a space that is safe, affirming, and affordable.
Our Annual Black History Award Ceremony brings together BIPOC leaders from across the community to acknowledge and celebrate their contributions. We make it our business to notice them and shine light where it’s due.
Our Resilience Enrichment Workshops offer a powerful blend of resilience and equity education, evidence-based coping tools from mental health professionals, and thoughtful care for hearts and minds—served alongside nourishing food and restorative conversations.
Reclaiming Our Power: The Work We Do
In 1828, Sojourner Truth made history as the first Black woman to successfully sue a white man and win. She reclaimed her son Peter, who had been stolen from her by a broken system.
At The Sojourner Truth Place, we follow in her bold footsteps—creating spaces where modern-day freedom fighters can lead, grow, and thrive.
We reclaim what has been unjustly withheld:
Access to space built for celebration, strategy, and joy
Support for the mental and emotional health of those on the frontlines
Recognition for the tireless, world-changing work they do every day
We are not just offering rooms—we are offering refuge, restoration, and revolution.
The S.P.A.C.E. Model
S.P.A.C.E. stands for Safe Partnerships Advancing Community Equity—a holistic, culturally responsive framework that supports BIPOC-led organizations through access, celebration, and resilience.
Safe: Free or donation-based event space for BIPOC organizations to host meetings, trainings, and events.
Partnerships: Expanding space access through Venue Partners across the Charlotte Metro Area (coming in 2026).
Advancing: Creating pathways to economic mobility and closing racial disparities.
Community: Honoring leaders at our Annual Black History Award Ceremony.
Equity: Hosting quarterly Resilience Enrichment Workshops to reduce burnout and build thriving organizations.
Theory of Change: If BIPOC leaders have access to space, celebration, and resilience enrichment, Then they build stronger organizations with less burnout, which leads to economic mobility, community equity, and the closing of disparity gaps.
